How is a paternity test sample obtained?
Paternity samples, whether for informational or legal purposes, are taken in the same way.
We will rub a cotton ball (swab) inside your mouth to collect the sample for testing. Sometimes a blood sample may be necessary if the swab sample does not contain enough DNA to obtain the results requested for the paternity test.
What is the difference between legal paternity testing and informative paternity testing?
- Informative Paternity Test: Test without legal validity. The presence or authorization of the mother is not necessary to carry out the test.
- legal paternity test: Proof with legal validity. Sampling must be done in the laboratory and with the presence of a witness. All processes will be controlled so as not to lose the chain of custody of the samples at any time. The report of the results constitutes a valid proof to present a judicial litigation.
What is analyzed in the laboratory to assess if they are father and son?
In the laboratory , we compare a series of DNA markers from the child with the same markers in the sample from the alleged father. This comparison allows us to determine whether or not a paternal relationship exists.
How long do paternity test results take?
You will receive the paternity test results in your email within approximately 10 business days .
Are the results of a paternity test confidential?
The sample collection for paternity tests is carried out by laboratory staff who send the samples to the central office, and they are the ones who directly send the results to the patient in a completely confidential manner.
