  • PATIENT CONDITIONS AND COLLECTION OF SAMPLES
  • I NEED A CARDIOVASCULAR RISK STUDY. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
  • You should not change your habits and your diet days before the analysis if your doctor does not tell you otherwise.
  • Go fasting, with a minimum of 8 to 12 hours. If you need it, you can drink water and take medication unless otherwise indicated by your doctor.
  • If you are diabetic and take medication for it, you should consult your doctor if you continue with your treatment while fasting.
  • You should not smoke before the extraction

To perform a cholesterol study:

  • Comply with the conditions prior to conducting the study.
  • Come to our Laboratories any day of the week

Experts Recommend:

  • From the age of 35 in men and from 45 in women, with a periodicity of 5 years if the values are normal.
  • Before age 35 when there are diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, etc.
  • 1 time a year if you take medicine to control high cholesterol.
  • During the gestation period
  • When menopause comes

Cholesterol is a natural fatty substance present in all cells of the human body necessary for the normal functioning of the body..

An important part of the cholesterol in our body is produced in the liver. The rest is provided through the diet and the cholesterol present in the bile, part of which is re-absorbed in the intestine.

It's recommended that cholesterol levels are between 120 and 200 mg / dl.

According to one study, very low levels of cholesterol in the blood have been associated with higher mortality than high levels; if it rises, it is one of the most important cardiovascular risk factors since it can cause hypercholesterolemia. In fact, people with blood cholesterol levels of 240 mg / dl have twice the risk of having a heart attack than those with levels of 200 mg / dl.

Is cholesterol necessary?

The answer is yes, cholesterol is necessary and it has many functions in our body.

  • Sex hormones: It is a precursor of sex hormones such as testosterone, progesterone, or estrogens.
  • Nervous system: Cholesterol helps improve the nerve impulse and the connection between neurons.
  • Bile salts and bile: in bile we can find cholesterol, although this is produced by the liver to facilitate the digestion of fats.
  • Vitamin D: essential to manage calcium levels in our body. Cholesterol derivatives are transformed thanks to sun exposure and vitamin D is obtained.

According to one study, very low levels of cholesterol in the blood have been associated with higher mortality than high levels.

What does good cholesterol and bad cholesterol mean?

Cholesterol is a non-water soluble fat that travels through the bloodstream attached to proteins called lipoproteins (let's visualize the image of the separation that occurs when we put oil in a glass of water).

We are going to differentiate good cholesterol from bad depending on its density:

- LDL (bad cholesterol). Low-Density Lipoproteins carry cholesterol from the liver to all cells in the body, and if it is in excess, it can cause it to accumulate on the walls of the arteries. High LDL cholesterol is for this reason one of the risk factors for coronary heart disease. Your optimal level should be between 70 and 120 mg / dl.

- HDL (good cholesterol). High-Density Lipoproteins carry cholesterol from the arteries to the liver to be eliminated. Its optimal level would be greater than 35 mg / dl in men and 40 mg / dl in women.

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are the main type of fat found in the blood.

It is advisable to keep your levels within normal ranges (below 150 mg / dl), since high levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and pancreatitis. They come from food, especially butter, oils, and other fats that we eat.

What is the difference between cholesterol and triglycerides?

They are both fat, but its usefulness varies:

  • El cholesterol is used to build cells and certain hormones.
  • The variety of triglycerides stored unused calories and provide energy to the body.

The diabetes epidemic is increasing rapidly in many countries, so much so that the risk of children suffering from it has increased as well. That is why the World Health Organization will focus on the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Diabetes is known as the silent disease because its symptoms often go unnoticed. This nickname is due to the fact that when blood glucose levels are altered, they injure the body, although the person does not realize it.

Scientifically it is called diabetes mellitus and it is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not use the insulin it produces effectively.

Over time, excess glucose in the blood can cause health problems, and although there is no cure for diabetes, there are three important things to be able to cope with:

  • Know her.
  • Know how to detect it.
  • Take care of yourself.

  • Go fasting, with a minimum of 8 to 12 hours.

To perform a cardiovascular risk study:

  • Comply with the conditions prior to conducting the study.
  • Come to our Laboratories any day of the week

The most important cardiovascular diseases are:

  • Myocardial infarction.
  • Stroke (brain thrombosis, embolism, or hemorrhage)

These diseases are very serious, they are the leading cause of death, causing almost 40 percent of all deaths in Spain.

We call cardiovascular risk the probability that a person has cardiovascular disease. They affect the arteries of the heart and the rest of the body, mainly the brain, kidneys and lower limbs.

Which are the risk factors?

According to the World Health Organization, a risk factor is any trait, characteristic, or exposure of an individual that increases their likelihood of suffering an illness or injury. We can classify the risk factors into two groups:

Modifiable factors: they are those in which we can intervene to avoid them, they can be:

Hypertension: Hypertension is a disease characterized by an increase in blood pressure levels above 140/90 mmHg and is considered one of the main public health problems in developed countries. Individuals with a blood pressure between 130/80 and 139/89 have twice the risk of developing high blood pressure than individuals with lower values.

Increased cholesterol: Cholesterol is one of the most important risk factors since, if its levels rise, it can cause hypercholesterolemia. In fact, people with blood cholesterol levels of 240 mg / dl have twice the risk of having a heart attack than those with figures of 200.

Diabetes: People who have diabetes have a higher risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease, so prevention of this disease is key. The reasons are that glucose can rise in the blood, damage blood vessels and accelerate atherosclerosis. Furthermore, diabetes also increases the risk of developing other diseases such as cerebrovascular diseases.

Overweight and obesity: Obesity is involved in the development of many pathologies. In the case of cardiovascular diseases, if the fat accumulates in the abdomen there will be more cardiovascular risk.

Smoking: It is the most important risk factor since the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in smokers is three times higher than in other people. From the Spanish Heart Foundation they point out that the possibility of suffering from a heart disease is proportional to the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years in which they continue to smoke.

Sedentary: Lifestyle changes in Western societies have led to an increase in sedentary lifestyle in the general population, despite the fact that sedentary lifestyle has been associated with cardiovascular mortality.

Alcohol abuse: Abusing alcohol is highly harmful since it is directly related to the development of cardiovascular diseases. 1 drink a day is recommended for women and 2 for men.

Anxiety and stress: Anxiety and stress are heart risk factors. And although there are no definitive studies that certify it, medical practice shows this: the less anxiety or stress a person has, the lower the risk of suffering a cardiovascular accident. And vice versa.

Non-modifiable factors: they are those in which we cannot intervene to modify them, they can be:

Age: As a person ages, so will his heart. For this reason, the elderly are the main victims of most heart disease.

In fact, the incidence of heart failure doubles from 40-45 years, according to the Spanish Heart Foundation.

Gender: Men are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease than women. Experts attribute this to female hormones exerting a protective effect. In fact, with menopause there is an increase in the rate of heart disease in women.

Family background: Numerous studies have shown a genetic component in cases of hypertension, familial hypercholesterolemia and type 2 diabetes, all factors related to the development of cardiovascular disease.

PATIENT CONDITIONS AND COLLECTION OF SAMPLES

Blood test:

  • You should not change your habits and your diet days before the analysis if your doctor does not tell you otherwise.
  • Go fasting, with a minimum of 8 to 12 hours. If you need it, you can drink water and take medication unless otherwise indicated by your doctor.
  • If you are diabetic and take medication for it, you should consult your doctor if you continue with your treatment while fasting.
  • You should not smoke before the extraction.

Urine analysis:

  • Use a specific sterile container for urine collection
  • In the morning and before urinating, you should clean your genitals with soap and water and then rinse with plenty of lukewarm water.
  • Collect the first urine of the morning, discarding the first and last part of urination. Make sure clothes and genitals do not directly touch the glass to avoid contamination
  • Close the glass, and if you have a tube, fill it up and make sure there are no spills.
  • You must deliver the urine as soon as possible. In case of not being able to make the delivery within an hour, it is recommended to put in the refrigerator.

Stool analysis:

  • Use a sterile container suitable for the test to be performed.
  • The diet should not vary since the test does not require a previous diet.
  • You should not collect the sample if there is active bleeding, such as that which occurs during menstruation, bleeding hemorrhoids, urinary problems that cause bleeding when urinating or if the defecation has involved an unusual effort, unless otherwise indicated by your doctor.
  • Contamination of the sample with urine should be avoided at all times.
  • The sample must be delivered as soon as possible to our facilities. In case of collecting before the day of delivery, store in a refrigerator.

WHAT IS THYROID?

The thyroid gland is located in the neck (above the clavicle). It is shaped like a butterfly and is one of the endocrine glands responsible for the production of hormones; They control the rhythm of many activities in the body, including how fast your heart beats or how quickly calories are burned.

The specialist may order laboratory and imaging tests to give a more accurate diagnosis.

IS THYROIDS NECESSARY?

Thyroid hormones affect heart rate, cholesterol level, body weight, energy level, muscle strength, skin conditions, menstrual regularity, memory, and many other functions. Thyroid hormones have effects on almost all tissues in the body and are necessary for the synthesis of many proteins; hence they are essential in the growth periods and for the organogenesis (developmental period) of the central nervous system. They also influence carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.

SYMPTOMS OF ALTERATION

If the function in the production of thyroid hormones is altered, either by default (HYPOTHYROIDISM) or by excess (HYPERTHYROIDISM), problems arise since a very important number of functions in the body are affected.

Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid

  • Anxiety
  • Weight loss
  • Tremors in the hands
  • Faster heart rate
  • Swelling
  • Protrusion of the eyes (bulging)
  • Difficulty to sleep

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid

  • Weight gain
  • Tiredness
  • Hair loss
  • Low tolerance to cold temperatures
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Constipation

WHEN TO CONDUCT A THYROID NET STUDY?

Anyone who wants to know if their levels are correct can carry out this study.

TESTS INCLUDED?

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): It is the most accurate measure of thyroid activity.
  • Free T3 and Free T4: Measure different thyroid hormones.
