El Virus of Papiloma Hhuman (HPV)It is a viral infection that sometimes causes warts to grow on the skin or mucous membranes, and in others it can cause different types of cancer. There are more than 100 types of HPV; and although most do not lead to cancer, some such as genital cancer can cause cervical cancer. Additionally, cancers of the anus, penis, vagina, vulva, and oropharynx (back of the throat) have been linked to HPV infection.

These infections are often transmitted sexually or through other skin-to-skin contact. There are currently vaccines that can help protect against strains of HPV that are more likely to cause genital warts or cervical cancer.

WHEN TO PERFORM AN STD HPV NETWORK STUDY?

An apparently healthy person may have a sexually transmitted disease without knowing it, since sometimes there are no signs or symptoms of the condition.

When you have a sexually transmitted disease, the risk of suffering from others increases, so pay attention to when to perform a Red HPV study and leave doubts:

  •  If you find out that your sexual partner has the virus POSITIVE.
  • You are sexually active and have had more than one sexual partner (or if your partner has had multiple partners since your last analysis).
  • You are pregnant or plan to be.
  • You have been forced to have a sexual act or engage in sexual activity against your will.
  • You have some of the following symptoms:
    • Discharge from the vagina, penis, or rectum.
    • Stinging or itching in the genital organs.
    • Abnormal bleeding from the vagina
    • Spots in the vulva area.
    • Painful urination
  • You have warts:

In most cases, the body's immune system overcomes an HPV infection before creating warts. When warts appear, they vary in appearance depending on the type of HPV that is involved:

Genital warts. These appear as flat lesions, small cauliflower-shaped bumps, or small stem-like bumps. In women, genital warts appear mainly on the vulva, but they can also appear near the anus, on the cervix, or in the vagina.

In men, genital warts appear on the penis and scrotum or around the anus. Genital warts rarely cause discomfort or pain, although they can be itchy or tender.

    • Common warts. Common warts appear as rough, raised bumps and usually occur on the hands and fingers. In most cases, common warts are simply unsightly, but they can also be painful or susceptible to injury or bleeding.
    • Plantar warts. Plantar warts are hard, grainy growths that usually appear on the heels or the balls of the feet. These warts can cause discomfort.
    • Flat warts. Flat warts are flat, slightly raised lesions. They can appear anywhere, but boys tend to have them on their faces and men tend to have them in the beard area. Women tend to have them on their legs.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU PERFORM THIS TEST?

In women between the ages of 30 and 65, it is advisable to perform HPV every three to five years if cervical cytology is also done. Women over 65 years of age can stop having the test if they have obtained normal results in three cervical smears or after two HPVs without abnormal results.

PREVENTION

  • Do not have sexual intercourse.
  • Using condoms reduces the risk of infection, although it does not eliminate it.
  • Limit the number of sexual partners, to more partners, more exposure and thus more risk.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises having these tests annually for those at high risk of infection.
  • Avoid douching. Douching decreases the amount of beneficial bacteria present in the vagina, which can increase the risk of infection.

The samples must be taken previously by a specialist and subsequently delivered to the laboratory.
